The CRU 2016 Top 10 December 31, 2016

I split this off into its own blog post because the previous one was getting pretty long. I wanted to write a little about the CRU Rankings. Here are the number of movies ranked in each list.

2013: 211
2014: 252
2015: 305
2016: 278

While Cinema Scope is escalating its goal every year for the number of movies they review at TIFF (an aspiration I wholeheartedly endorse), CRU is going in the opposite direction. Starting in September, I’ve been making a stronger effort to ignore mainstream junk and focus only on well-reviewed movies (with occasional exceptions). This is why the 2016 count is smaller than last year’s. I will almost certainly cover fewer new movies in 2017 than I did this year.

This was CRU’s 2016 top 10 as of today, December 31, 2016.

1. Cemetery of Splendor (98 • 45 reviews)
2. Moonlight (96 • 39 reviews)
3. Cameraperson (96 • 29 reviews)
4. Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience (96 • 7 reviews)
5. Kubo and the Two Strings (96 • 6 reviews)
6. Toni Erdmann (95 • 52 reviews)
7. Paterson (95 • 41 reviews)
8. Everybody Wants Some!! (95 • 25 reviews)
9. Silence (95 • 15 reviews)
10. Dark Horse (95 • 5 reviews)
