While Sharits is known for his aggressive flickers, his only 3-D work is unexpectedly subtle. What appear to be microscopic cells “germinate” the screen while gradual shifts in their movement and color scheme bring the complete image forth into being.
A dynamic work of abstraction in which the screen is transformed into a pulsating, undulating field of dots whose rhythms and interactions, rendered in 3-D, become truly cosmic.
Sharits’ film, a silent piece composed of microscopic colored light forms dancing frame by frame, with subtly depth-defying reach, utilized its three dimensions to create internal patterns within a slowly modulating color field. The effect brought to mind everything from rippling waves to swarming static, manipulating the mind’s eye into mentally conceiving of a potentially infinite holographic spectrum.
