  • The atonal Takemitsu score combines with the avant-garde cinematography by Shinoda’s regular DP Masao Kosugi to create a genre masterpiece that’s also a stunning art film. The film looks years ahead of its time, not only incorporating hand-held shots, rare for a period samurai film, but also switching to first-person perspective for the climactic assassination, forcing the viewer to assume the perspective of the killer. It’s a complex, but breathtaking piece of cinema.
