  • The film is interesting to consider as a provocative corrective to other films of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that explicitly tried to ‘come to terms’ with German history: Farocki's brand of materialism stands in stark contrast to the classic works of this moment, Kluge's The Patriot (1979), Edgar Reitz's Heimat (1984) and even Fassbinder's Lili Marleen (1981), which in their various ways seek essentially superstructural explanations for the success of German fascism.
