Black Roots

Black Roots Poster
  • The faces and stories presented in Lionel Rogosin’s docu-wonder, Black Roots, do not amount to just so many negro hard-luck stories or shoulder-chip Afrocentric defiance. Rogosin’s passion for social justice and the disaffected, which he fashioned into visual song in 1956’s On the Bowery and 1958’s Come Back Africa, can’t outdistance his fascination with the individual. Every shot in Black Roots is a biography in miniature, not a sample in some ethnographic survey.
