  • This doesn’t achieve much that isn’t already contained in A Woman Under the Influence, and furthermore removes that film’s most interesting concern (the gender divide in our expectations of parental responsibility). Still, the stretch at the end of the third act, where Lenny drugs his kids into a semi-coma, putters about nervously waiting for them to wake up, then explodes with joy when they finally come back to life, is fantastic.

  • The Safdies perceptively catch, with light touches, the boys' awareness of trouble around them and its part in awakening artistic consciousness. In Daddy Longlegs, the Safdie brothers reveal that what they lived and observed in their childhood on a daily basis, for all its grinding pettiness, has grand, heroic, uncanny dimensions.
