  • “Daniel” is not boring, although it can be heavy-handed, if less so than Mr. Lumet’s 1965 adaptation of “The Pawnbroker.” (It is also more skillfully edited.) The director wears his heart on his sleeve: No Hollywood movie has ever more fully dramatized what Vivian Gornick termed “the romance of American Communism,” nor employed more untranslated Yiddish.
