  • In its portrayal of masculine ritual as latent desire, the film resembles nothing so much as Beau Travail (which was of course based partially on Billy Budd). Where Denis (like Genet) reveals desire through an underlying violence, Sokurov does so through tenderness. Sound design gave Russian Ark its joyful atmosphere; here it's built on layers of whispers, bird calls, musical themes based on Tchaikovsky swimming with radio static. How many of Sokurov's characters spend whole movies whispering?
