  • I can't say I entirely blame director Tony Richardson and scenarist Edward Bond for trying to update Nabokov's dreamlike milieu, and it is a good try, full of intelligent modifications and economical equivalences, many of which can be fully appreciated only by someone who has read the book. Unfortunately, the ingenuity of Richardson and Bond is never equal to the inspiration of Nabokov, and the movie fails, as the novel succeeds, on that mysterious meeting ground of story and style.
