  • Martial-arts splatter gags may have been pioneered earlier by Akira Kurosawa in Sanjuro (1962), but Baby Cart at the River Styx—where characters give entire monologues with swords jammed into their heads or while blood sprays from their necks like a lawn sprinkler—pushes the notion as far as it can go. That excess helped spread the gospel of Lone Wolf outside of Japan, when River Styx formed the bulk of the American-edited 1980 film Shogun Assassin and became a grindhouse legend.
