  • Anthony Mann’s “Men in War” (1957), a wide-screen, black-and-white picture, newly released on Blu-ray and DVD by Olive Films, is squarely in the Fuller tradition — a little less economical and, lacking Fuller’s sardonic humor, a little more grim... That the Defense Department disassociated itself from the movie, citing scenes offensive to “the dignity of commissioned and noncommissioned officers,” speaks to the integrity of Mann’s vision.

  • As in many of his films, Mann explores the dynamic between these two characters within the overarching group dynamic. This is just one way in which he effortlessly merged aspects of art cinema with the audience’s relentless demand for entertaining stories.
