  • Shinozaki’s mastered the form—clearly a cinephile, with great instincts and a taste for realism, albeit of the somewhat ponderously dark variety. The acting is extraordinary—Uemura Miho’s performance is kinda transcendent—but somehow doesn’t quite escape the fictional mold. And there’s a lurking ambiguity about how much I enjoy the underlying sensibility—it works against my enjoyment of his form even though I’m having trouble pinning it down.
