This 1961 milestone represented a marked departure for Disney. The contemporary story of a small army of puppies kidnapped by Cruella De Vil was grounded in the real world (televisions abound) unlike the fantasies and fairy tales upon which the studio built its brand. The production team took an utterly modern approach to character design an development (Cruella smokes!), art direction, and the music, which featured few songs and an uncharacteristically jazzy score.
