Akerman’s flowing images stick close to Michelle in her wanderings through town and capture her romantic adventures with a disarming bluntness. Audaciously filming in the streets with no attempt to conceal anachronistic artifacts and fashions, Akerman marks the contemporary world with the buried feelings of her own youth, as if to prove Faulkner’s dictum, “The past is not dead. In fact, it’s not even past.”
