With its shades of Sunset Blvd., Buñuel and Polanski, the film defies its “camp” reputation. Losey’s is an oeuvre that keeps on giving.
This kinky smashup between old Hollywood and new Hollywood (understandably) baffled audiences when it was initially released. Seen today, it's actually not as campy as it sounds, thanks to Losey's pokerfaced handling of the far-out story and remarkably believable performances by all. Taylor even gets to show off some mod 60's fashions by Christian Dior.
