    The movie's showiness can catch you off guard: its abundance of soliloquies; its operatic, fog-shrouded sets; its sudden tonal shifts from lewd slapstick to wistful contemplation. What grounds it all is Piazzolla's music, which in a few bars accomplishes in miniature what the movie builds toward: the re-invention of a stalled national song.
