  • Stroheim is better-cast here than in any other sound film--including GRAND ILLUSION--because his real strength isn't aristocratic elegance, but pretentious disdain: He spends the entire movie looking like he's offended by the lives of everyone around him. In GABBO, Stroheim plays a self-important ventriloquist slowly growing crazy; and, in a way, his madness becomes our madness as his subtly lurid story becomes increasingly marginalized by the song-and-dance scenes featuring minor characters.
