  • The detailing of the diffuse power dynamics in this upper-middle class Chilean family is solid, but once these relationships get diagrammed the film just ambles about, trying out a few different second act directions, before finally throwing down an inspirational flash grenade of unearned catharsis, intended to blind us to the fact that its conclusion doesn’t really make sense.

  • Loses control in the middle, when it turns her into a serial exterminator of other maids, then the final act (a) goes soft, (b) blames the maid's psychosis on the family and (c) leaves the house altogether, none of which comes off as a good idea. Falls apart long before we get to the final, incongruous dedication to the maids who (presumably) served Silva's own family...
