The Model and the Marriage Broker

  • This delicate 1951 comedy of loneliness gave the great George Cukor, on the rebound from nearly two decades of artificiality as an MGM contract director, a chance to explore the rarely depicted middle-class Manhattan of workday professionals.

  • THE MODEL AND THE MARRIAGE BROKER is a new favorite of mine largely due to Thelma Ritter's incredible performance and the way Cukor blocks every scene between her and Jeanne Crain. It's not a battle of the sexes knock 'em-sock 'em relationship like Hepburn and Tracy, rather an earnest attempt for two hardheaded women to bond and form the mother-daughter friendship they know they deserve.
