  • The center of such a thing is unclassifiable, but the film’s ending pulls away from the importance of confession, presenting us with thought-crimes that cannot be verbalized. Cop and sex-crook are united not because one longs to take the other’s place but because they are the only ones who gaze so deeply and coldly upon the aftermath of the unspeakable crime. It’s less, then, about confessing than about witnessing, the pressure of which sometimes demands internal combustion.

  • Few genre films come as close to entering the abyss as Sidney Lumet's The Offence, which effectively plays out as one elongated interrogation both of a single witness and the tortured psyche of Sergeant Johnson (Sean Connery).
