  • As for the film's take on imperialism, I found it incredibly muddled—in particular, it's unclear to me whether the anti-nationalist missionary who renounces his U.S. citizenship is meant to be perceived as the sole voice of reason or a blithering idiot. Seems like there's a lot of hedging going on. None of this stuff would matter so much were the film hugely engaging on its surface, but it's three long, pretty logy hours, anchored by one of McQueen's most unproductively recessive performances.
