  • Sidney Lumet's tactful, tasteful direction serves Anton Chekhov admirably, but at one remove from the original inspiration, so that what was once tragicomic is now bittersweet. Lumet is too often dismissed as an expressive embalmer of theater pieces, as if expressive embalming were not an art in its own right. The fact remains that Lumet has understood Chekhov's subtler nuances sufficiently to render them more naturally than they could ever be rendered on the stage.
