  • As much as the ending may have wowed me, though, the movie's single most impressive component is a set piece about midway through set atop a bank's roof. It prefigures the opening ofVertigo, includes a quick handheld shot (a rarity for the '40s), and left my palms sweaty. Director Robert Hamer... knows uncannily well how to tighten a scene around the viewer, heightening tension through composition and editing.
