  • Plays pretty much like what it is: a cheapo movie shot in 10 days on sets from star Dan Duryea's then-current TV series. Intrigue is decidedly low-wattage, but Robert Aldrich, who's uncredited as director for reasons that never seem to have been made public (his producer credit remains, held onscreen twice as long to cover the one that got yanked), starts experimenting with the off-kilter noir compositions that would take full form in Kiss Me Deadly just a year later.

  • A nervy burlesque of John Huston's exotic thrillers, with Aldrich showcasing the "hoodlum’s touch" needed to whip up clueless soldiers of fortune and atomic MacGuffins in preparation for KISS ME DEADLY.
