Top 100 2014 New Releases, Ranked by CRU Rating January 1, 2015

Below is a long list of CRU’s top 100 and bottom 10 of 2014, ranked by their CRU Ratings. Judging from Alex Fung’s Letterboxd list of NYC releases, which was created using Mike D’Angelo’s authoritative list, there were slightly over 1000 new releases in 2014 (which is more than the 900 or so the New York Times had guessed). CRU covered 247 of them.

(In case you’re wondering about what looks like a discrepancy in numbers, the four TV series on this ranked list (The Knick, True Detective, Olive Kitteridge and Looking) are of course not on Mike and Alex’s lists. And Nymphomaniac is listed twice on their lists and only once on this one, so I counted it twice to reach that number, 247.)

I tried my best to list all the movies CRU covered last year, but it became too exhausting to list them all. I did as much as I could. This year, I’m hoping to create a feature on the site that ranks the current year’s movies by CRU Rating and automatically moves the titles up and down the list as scores are adjusted.

You’ll probably be surprised to discover that Sono Sion’s Himizu took the #1 spot. The reason it ranks so high should be easy to figure out. The reviews for that movie are both minimal and uniformly ecstatic. Beyond that, you’ll find more familiar titles.

At 46 reviews, Goodbye to Language has almost certainly collected the most number of reactions out of any movie in CRU history. For 2014, Under the Skin is at a distant second with 37 reviews.
